Youth Football
The Chester Romans Youth Academy has been set up to encourage and enable young people between the ages of 14 and 18 to participate in kitted American Football under safe and controlled conditions.
This is the third season of the Youth Academy, and we are delighted with the number of young people taking part.
The Youth team (aged 16-18) have already played a game against their counterparts at the Manchester Titans, losing 18-8 after an enjoyable match, and have games lined up against; Edinburgh Wolves (road trip), Manchester Titans (rematch), Redditch Arrows (home and away) and Staffordshire Surge.
Additionally it is hoped that the Youth can take part in the Festival of Football in Redditch again, a tournament which saw Roman Rich Catherall pick up the MVP award last year.
The Junior team (14-16) is struggling for numbers this season, but it is hoped that they will be able to put together a team in time for the Festival of Football also. Other Junior teams have invited the Romans to play them, and we anticipate that this becomes a reality in the near future with games against Manchester Titans (Junior), Birmingham Bulls and Coventry Jets.
The Romans are also developing players of a younger age, both at training sessions, and through links into local schools. Recently Romans Head Coach, Simon Wainwright started a programme to teach 11-14 year olds Flag Football, a non contact version of the sport at schools in North Wales. This is a weekly event, and it is hoped that the coaching will be able to continue at schools across the region.
