In 2001 the Romans inducted the first 4 members into their
hall of fame. This is an award to signify long and loyal
service to the club, and is open to people who have served
as players, coaches or administrators.
The first 4 inductees are –
Simon Ferguson
Simon
served as the head coach during most of the 90’s.
A liked and respected coach, his grasp of fundamentals and
the skills required to play each position are second to
none. Some will remember him for his "Larry the Lobster"
tie, but most for his excellent leadership and dedication
to the Romans cause.
Gavin Woolgar
Gavin was the team’s tailback from 1991-1997. During
that time he set many Britball rushing records, some of
which still stand today. Often contributing 300 yards a
game, Gavin was a tireless worker, possessing the magical
knack of avoiding tacklers through a combination of speed,
quickness and guile.
Mike Rose
Mike
was one of the many players for who Britball came a little
late. If Mike had started playing at 18, we can only speculate
on how good he would have become. A ferocious linebacker
in the early part of his career, Mike moved to tight end
towards the end of his playing days. A regular in the Northern
All Star Team, Mike was a force for many years. He holds
the Romans single game tackle record with 21.
Les Dillon
Les spent many years as the team’s manger, and along
with wife Chris, is the main reason the Romans have prospered
when so many British clubs have fallen by the wayside. Dividing
his time between running the club and playing centre, Les’s
easy going and approachable manner was an asset both to
the club, and to Britball in general.
