Coaches Corner

Words and wisdom from the illustrious coaching crew of the Chester Romans.

Feb 21 2006

Guys,

Welcome to the latest Coaches Corner.

First off, my thanks go out to all of you that are continuing to turn out regularly at this inhospitable time of the year. As I said on Sunday, it makes it so much more worthwhile when we can field full offenses and defenses against one another: it also helps the coaching staff to do a more accurate assessment of what (and who) is working well (or not).

Not only that, it means that scrimmage times can be extended (and the number of figure of eights that must be completed can be reduced).

As I’m sure you are aware, once the fundamentals are in place, there’s no substitute for working in game type situations as often as possible, and I promise you that as long as we keep getting sufficient numbers down to training over the upcoming weeks, the amount of scrimmage time will continue to increase in preparation for the new season.

Remember though, that without funds the club will not function at all this season. As Ickle mentioned on Sunday, time is now marching on and it’s time for everyone to commit fully to the club. 7th May is the deadline for either all subs to be paid in full (or a financial arrangement to be in place with the Treasurer). Please, don’t get yourselves in a position where I can’t allow you to play because you haven’t paid!

Ok, to finish off this weeks “Play of the Week” award goes to a guy who has made leaps and bounds since joining the team at the end of last year: we’ve tried him out at a variety of positions on D, his latest incarnation being at nose tackle on Sunday.

Undaunted at being plugged into yet another new role, he showed tremendous drive and energy throughout scrimmage, and had a number of QB pressures/sacks, so maybe (just for this week) we rename it this award as “Plays of the Week”…step forward and take a bow, Mike Ireland (or Flingstang as he is better known to regular users of that Interweb thing).

Well done to Mike and I’ll see you all again on Sunday,

Gary
